Travelling has always been my passion and I was lucky to visit 50 countries by the time I was 30. Then, along came babies and the exploration has slowed down or at least changed a lot. We have still managed a few big trips – two to Texas, one to France and one to Spain – but it is easy to slip into the daily drudgery of life and not get out and about enough.
That’s why I love the idea of #Take12trips. It was set up by Clare at Need Another Holiday and involves planning an adventure each month. It doesn’t have to be a holiday or trip abroad, just visiting somewhere new or having a day out. I think part of our problem is that we have lots of ideas but unless it gets written in the diary then the weeks pass by and everyday life gets in the way.
So this year I have started planning and it’s been an exciting and uplifting experience. I can’t wait to get started and share all our adventures with you.
January: Gulliver’s Splash park
This is somewhere we have been meaning to take J for ages. It is only about 45 minutes away and I know he will love it. They do a special toddler session which is a bit calmer and have loads of slides and water play.
One of my NCT friends has moved back up to York so we are taking a trip up to see her with the rest of the group. We have been away every year together so it will be a fun weekend and I love York too.
March: Romantic night away
My parents have given us a night off for Christmas. They are away in Spain until February so when they get back we will be taking our first trip away from baby A. It doesn’t really matter where we go as long as we get some quality time together – and some rest!
April: Whipsnade zoo
I think J is at an age when he would love the zoo now and he has always been interested in animals. We have some Tesco vouchers to use up which makes this a much cheaper day out and Whipsnade is not too far from us.
May: Spa break
My school friends and I try to get together a couple of times a year and are planning a quick spa break so we can have a girly catch up and leave the dads in charge at home.
June: Villa holiday
I need some sunshine!! The only time we have ever had a villa was for our wedding in Cyprus and I loved the relaxed vibe and having our own pool. We are planning to go away with my parents, perhaps to Italy or Greece
July: Norfolk Coast
The Norfolk coast is only a few hours away and can be visited for the day, or we have friends who live close by. It is a great place to visit in the Summer and J loves playing in the sand.
August: Letchworth outdoor splash park
This is literally only 20 minutes away from us but we only went for the first time last year. It is a brilliant little park, J loved it and baby A should be walking by then so she can enjoy it too.
I have so many fond childhood memories of Cornwall and we are planning to borrow my parents’ camper van and take advantage of the late Summer in the first week of term as J will start school next year – can’t believe that!
October: Day in London
My husband and I go to London fairly regularly – I took both kids to the Natural History Museum with friends when baby A was 5 weeks old! – but we haven’t really had a family day out there. J would love the parks or South Bank or one of the many museums.
I would love to take J to the theatre. He has been to see Peppa Pig Live – does that count?! – and a baby opera but it would be lovely to take him to see something else. There are lots of great productions aimed at children and I think he is old enough to sit through one now.
December: Christmas markets
I always love seeing the Christmas markets in TV but have never been. Ideally we would get over to the ones in Belgium but if that doesn’t happen then I have heard great things about the ones in Birmingham instead.
What trips are you planning this year?
