Travel has always been important to our family and I want J and A to grow up with a good understanding of the world around them. As Mr C is American, and they have dual citizenship, we also want them to be able to grasp that Daddy is from a whole other continent.
We already have a world map up in their room but I loved the idea of getting a globe too so when we were asked to review the Smart Globe Myth from Oregon Scientific, it was a perfect match.
It is lightweight, compact, and really quick and easy to set up. It comes with batteries already installed which is a lifesaver at birthdays or Christmas when J and A just want to play with their new toys straight away. So there is literally nothing to do apart from switch it on and get started! It also comes with a USB cable and you can charge it that way too.
There is something fascinating about globes, even as an adult, and the whole concept of the world and how it works. The main globe is bright, inviting and does a great job of bringing that all to life. The real gem of it though is it’s 2-in-1 night mode.mode.
You can light it up to see all the constellations, which really sets the imagination on fire. J loves anything to do with space, stars and planets so this is a mesmerising feature for him and is great to look at as we wind down for bed time.
As well as the basic globe, there is also a controls panel where you can access lots of interactive options. You can learn earth facts, listen to 10 fairy tales and hear all about the constellations and zodiac legends. It’s really easy to use and something the children can activate on their own and enjoy while playing. Miss A loved listening to the stories while J like recounting the facts he has learnt.
A brilliant feature of the globe, which took it to a whole new level, is the addition of an augmented reality app. You simply download it onto your phone, hover it over the globe and various different pictures pop up in front of your eyes. The kids loved it and to be honest, so did I!
J loved the dinosaurs and also the different sights around the world, like the Eiffel Tower which we visited last year. You can click on the photo and it will display facts about what you can see. This really helps bring all the different parts of the world to life and now they are already planning their round the world trip!
My favourite feature was the augmented reality weather. These are images that move and come to life in different parts of the world and really help the children understand the concepts in a fun anf educational way. We will definitely be using the app a lot in the future.
I think the Smart Globe Myth is great value at £39.99 and something that both J and A will get hours of fun and learning out of. It would make an ideal Christmas present and is something that I think will grow with them and bepart of our family learning for a long time.
