Eating out with food allergies can be stressful so it is great to find somewhere that is clued up, where you can enjoy a family meal without worrying about a reaction.
The Ffynonne Arms is an allergy-friendly pub in Pembrokeshire, Wales, offering dairy free and gluten free meals as well as catering for other dietary requirements. The owner, Hedydd, has multiple food intolerances and she wanted to offer something that catered for other people in the same situation.
The pub felt very traditional – a lot of the clientale were speaking Welsh and there were two horses tethered in the car park! It was very friendly and J was quickly running around introducing himself to the locals.
Allergy safe carvery
When I had rung up to book Hedydd asked what J was allergic to and pointed out what he would be able to eat on the Sunday cavery – almost everything as it is all cooked with olive oil, not butter! She even offered to keep him some mashed potato aside before they added the dairy.
I came off the phone feeling so excited and refreshed that someone seemed happy to help rather than being put out by J’s needs. We visited at the end of our family-friendly holiday at Clydey Cottages in and it was a great end to a great week.
The carvery was lovely – roast pork or beef, stuffing, roast and mashed potatos, carrot, green beans, cabbage, cauliflower cheese – and very fresh and well cooked. It was so nice not to have to worry about cross contamination or a missed ingredient.
I had seen a dessert on the menu that I thought would be suitable for J but unfortunately it wasn’t egg free so Hedydd found a dairy free, egg free ice cream especially for him and he loved it! It was the first time he had ever had ice cream which was quite special. It tasted good too as I finished it off!
I thought the meal was a little overpriced -£43 for the three of us – and my sticky toffee pudding was more of a sponge. However, these small things were totally worth it for J to be able to eat a full Sunday lunch safely and to be greeted with such hospitality and appreciation of his allergies.
