Food challenges: Baked milk challenge – passed!

October 8, 2015 by Emma 8 Comments

I’m almost a little scared to say it out loud but….J passed the next step of his food challenges. One whole muffin. Baked with milk. Eaten with no reaction. Baked milk challenge passed!

For those of you who know his history, you’ll understand that passing this food challenge feel momentous. He has been reacting severely to milk since he was a baby and last year, after he had his anaphylactic reaction, this kind of progress seemed a million miles away.

Climbing the milk ladder

Earlier this year he passed the first stage of the milk ladder in a hospital food challenge and then we successfully moved on to stage two but I have delayed trying the third stage for months now. Somehow it seemed like a very big, scary leap. Plus, after he failed his baked egg challenge in May, I was even more nervous about it.

But, I’ll say it again – he passed his baked milk challenge! No reaction, nothing.

milk ladder

We are only on step 3 of the milk ladder and there are 13 in total so we still have a way to go but it’s very exciting and reassuring progress.

Luckily, we have a great consultant at Addenbrookes hospital who has encouraged us to do food challenges and we are moving in  the right direction. We have J’s annual skin prick tests in a few weeks’ time and I’m hoping if his numbers for milk are low we might be able to move up another rung.

My Fireman Sam mad toddler is always playing at climbing ladders to rescue people -I hope he can conquer this ladder too!

That is such great news for you all! I can only imagine what it must be like having a toddler with such a severe allergy. Good luck with the next skin prick test – hopefully he will slowly but surely move up the ladder.

Hiya! I know your post was a while ago but was wondering which recipe you used for the cake/muffins? We’ve found one online but my son hates them so we can’t get any further xxx

We actually used the same one we used for the egg challenge but with real milk https://www.freefromfarmhouse.co.uk/recipes-2/free-from/dairy-free/delicious-dairy-free-muffins/ If he is allergic to egg too, you can use 40g apple sauce instead. Good luck!
