A few weeks ago baby A had her first allergic reaction during weaning.
I knew it was inevitable. She has been reacting to so many things through my breastmilk.
But I wasn’t ready for a taste of Banana to send her small body into overdrive.
First came the hives.
The red welts rising from her beautiful baby cheeks.
Tears staining them as her tiny hands scratched the swollen skin.
Then her lips and eyes began to swell.
I’ve done it before; I know the drill. But still the panic set in.
I gave her antihistamine and held her close. Epipens ready.
The swelling subsided. The hives went away and she slept soundly on my chest as I breathed her in.
A few hours later they were back, spreading across her body and covering her little limbs with hard, hot lumps.
I scooped her up and drove her to the doctors.
Another two doses of antihistamine and the reaction was over.
But the journey has only just begun…
