10 signs you’re an allergy mum

March 22, 2017 by Emma 10 Comments

It probably wasn’t a club you asked to join, or one you ever expected to part of but it sure takes one to know one – here are 10 signs you’re an allergy mum!

  1. You could take out shares in baby wipes. They go everywhere, wipe everything and you are the one handing them out at parties or play groups.
  2. You can list your child’s allergies, and any derivatives, like a Mastermind contestant.
  3. You have chased a child carrying food out of a soft play area, or park, or probably both!
  4. You use the words ‘anaphylaxis’ and ‘epinepherene’ as easily as cat and dog. And it takes you a moment to realise they are not everyday vocabulary for most people.
  5. You can spot an empty food container or crumb covered surface from 100m away.
  6. You could win a world record for speed reading labels without missing an ingredient.
  7. You have had the ‘eggs are not dairy’ conversation. And may have even drawn a picture of a cow laying an egg to illustrate!
  8. Your secret guilty pleasure is eating a Snickers, Dairy Milk or other allergen-containing food when you’re out the house without your child.
  9. You could give any Bake Off or Masterchef contestant a run for their money in the kitchen. You can substitute or recreate any dish and often do.
  10. You would give back your child’s allergies in a heartbeat but you will help them face them forever.

10 signs you're an allergy mum - it takes one to know one!

I am in awe of mummies who handle food allergies with such aplomb! We are very lucky that our daughter does not have any allergies but she has a little boy in her class who suffers badly. So she is really aware of his triggers and when we send things to school (birthdays etc) she always ensures that we include something special for him!

Aw bless … my youngest has eczema but luckily it’s easing up a bit now so I don’t have to be sooo crazy neurotic about it. I will allow her a strawberry or citrus fruit once a week – backed up by a tub of cetaphil! the joys!

I love the cow laying an egg. It is interesting how many times people comment on my site about my recipes not being dairy free because they have egg in!! What??

YES! although not number 8 ! For me number 8 would be secretly pinching some of their freefrom treats for myself – or more likely trying to sneakily eat a bar of Moo Free or Montezumas vegan chocolate before the kids noticed! haha!!

What about getting the host of a part to go through the bins to check labels? EVERY TIME! I think people think I’m odd!
