Is CBD oil legal? What are the benefits? Does CBD oil get you high? How do you know what you’re getting? These were some of my questions when I starting looking into it a few years ago. [AD]
I first researched it two years ago, when Mr C was diagnosed with cancer and we were exploring treatment options. We both agreed it would be something to consider in the future if the convential treatments didn’t work or he needed to control any symptoms.
Recently, Mr C had been on a higher dose of medication have grown so we were interested to see if CBD oil could help ease cancer therapy side effects. I have also read more about using CBD oil for anxiety and sleep, which is something I have struggled with, so was keen to see if it could make a difference.
What is CBD oil?
CBD (cannabinoid) is found in the cannabis plant. It shares a lot of the same properties as the well known drug but does not contain THC, the ingredient that makes people get high. The cannabinoids are chemical compounds that trigger receptors in the body that control pain, emotions and other functions.
Is CBD oil legal?
CBD oil is legal in the UK as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC and has been derived from industrial hemp that is EU approved.
What can CBD oil be used for?
People use CBD oil for pain, to help mental health problems such as anxiety and depression and a variety of other reasons. There are also many people who use CBD oil for cancer medication side effects such as nausea and fatigue and there is some evidence it may have anti-cancer properties. Two CBD based drugs have been approved by the NHS for treating epilepsy and MS.
Are there any studies into it?
There have been a number of clinical trials and studies looking at its safety and efficacy, the most comprehensive being this one from the World Health Organisation.
Mistatera CBD oil
When Mistatera asked us to try out their oil, we were keen to share our experiences.
Mistatera is a fully certified full spectrum CBD oil, meaning it has a variety of different active cannabinoids. There are two strengths – 5%, which is the one we tried and is a standard strength on the market, and 11% which is one of the stronger oils available.
To take it, you just put the drops under your tongue and hold them for a few seconds. It tastes ‘grassy’ but not unpleasant. The box recommends starting with one drop per day (each drop is 2mg CBD) but we have been taking up to 10 (20mg). The doses used in clinical trials are much higher than this.
Mistatera review: Our verdict
We have been using the oil for a month now and have been very pleased with the results.
Mr C says he feels more mellow and it has helped him ride the waves of his symptoms from the cancer medications. It is safe to take it alongside conventional treatments but of course, always check any alternative therapies with your doctor first.
I’ve found it has helped me sleep more deeply and reduced the amount of anxiety dreams I’ve had so it has had a positive impact on my mental health.
We will both continue using it and if you would like to try some, Mistatera are offering free samples
