I poisoned my baby.
As he cried uncontrollably, scratched his flaking skin and lost weight, I poisoned him more.
The doctors told me to.
I went to numerous GPs and was referred to the hospital where three different consultants told me that his symptoms couldn’t be caused by a cow’s milk allergy through my breastmilk.
Unfortunately I believed them.
Is it cow’s milk allergy?
His severe eczema, colic and sickness are classic symptoms of a cow’s milk allergy. That is why I am happy to see the new TV adverts for ‘Is it cow’s milk allergy?’
It is a big step in the right direction for helping parents recognise the symptoms and get the support they need. Sadly there is still a long way to go in educating doctors and healthcare professionals.
J got officially diagnosed with milk allergy (amongst others) at 8 months. Still I was told to continue breastfeeding him.
He had his first anaphylactic reaction at 15 months and I wonder now if his allergy would have been as severe if we had eliminated dairy from his diet earlier.
I feel guilty for poisoning J.
I feel sad that neither of us enjoyed his early months.
And I feel angry that I was given the wrong advice.
I hope this new campaign helps other mums catch their children’s milk allergy earlier and gives them the information and confidence to make the changes they need to.
