Does bedtime look anything like this in your house?
Me: Time to clean your teeth.
Me: OK, I want you in the bathroom by the time I count to three.
Kids: I am eating/playing/tired.
Me: If you don’t come here now, you’re not….(insert loose threat)
Kids: (Brush unentusiastically for 30 seconds before stating they are done)
And repeat, every morning and evening!
If you are stuck in this situatuion too then you will be excited to hear about a new toothbrushing app I have discovered called Playbrush, which turns your child’s toothbrush into a games controller. It is not an exaggeration to say that Playbrush has revolutionised teeth brushing in our house! J and Miss A are now fighting over who gets to go first and there is no need for bullying, bribing or begging.
It works by adding a slip on bluetooth attachment to your child’s manual toothbrush. This then syncs up with the app and allows them to play games, with each brushstoke turning into an action on the screen. I am not great with anything techy and it was really easy to set up and connect. It comes with a small USB cable you can use to charge it. It also comes with a see through plastic pocket you can attach to the wall so the kids don’t need to hold the phone or tablet. We didn’t have any space to attach this but it would be really useful.
The basic version comes with two games – Utoothia, which is all about fighing monsters and Utoothia Paint, which allows you to do virtual colouring. J and Miss A like both games and switch up which one they ask to play with. They love trying to beat their score and seeing their name on the leaderboard. You can also pay a small monthly subscription to access three more games, which I think is good to do as I can imagine they may get a bit bored of these ones after a while, like kids do.
I have been worried about them not brushing their teeth properly, especially as Miss A’s oat milk is so high in sugar. I have heard some horroe stories about dairy free milks rotting their teeth. So I now feel more relaxed that they are doing it well and for long enough. There is a 2 minute countdown on the app so you know they are brushing for the correct amount of time – although some nights they actually ask to do it twice! Cleverly, it even encourages them to brush evenly around their mouth as every direction denotes a different action on the game. You can even check their stats and get sent an email each week with a more detailed breakdown!
Playbrush costs £29.99 for one or £49.99 for two, which includes the two free games. You can then subscribe for £5.99 every 3 months to get access to three more games. I would definitely do this so they have more variety and that’s less than £2 a month which I think is a bargain for proper teeth cleaning!
Playbrush are also launching some more exciting additions this summer:
- An electric/sonic Playbrush, which will be released this September. They are raffling off a trip to Disneyland Paris for all pre-orders so keep your eyes open for that!
- Two new mini games and a brushing coach application for all users.
I must admit, I’m not really much of an app girl but Playbrush has converted me. It’s great to see technology applied in such a simple but effective way to something so important as teaching your kids to brush their teeth properly. I honestly cannot recommend it highly enough and only wish I had known about it sooner! If you are looking to take the stress out of teeth brushing and feel reassured they are doing it properly then this is for you.
