Sometimes things happen in life that make you think the unthinkable – what if I wasn’t here as my children grow up? It makes you start wondering about all the things you would want them to know and all the lessons you want to leave them.
There’s so much I want to tell them: how much they’re loved, how beautiful they are and how much I believe in them.
You are enough
You are enough. Just you, with all your flaws, insecurities and contradictions. Yes, work on being your best self and learn and grow from your mistakes. But never feel you need to change into someone else. They have their own flaws. You are strong, beautiful and unique and anyone who tells you any different, is fighting their own battle.
Do what makes you happy
I never want you to feel like you need to conform, be sensible or choose the safe route. Find something you love doing, follow what you are passionate about and do what makes you happy. That will not come from trying to please others, doing what you think you should be doing or worrying about meeting a certain standard. It will come from within.
Be the change you want to see
Small acts of kindness, empathy and generosity go a long way and if you want to make a difference, start small. Don’t get me wrong – aim high, speak out and dream of changing the world and I have every faith you can do it. But don’t forget that the way we treat people every day is the foundation of who we are. Actions speak louder than words.
Take the trip
Always say yes to the trip, whether it’s the park, a new city or an adventure abroad. Being open to new places and new experiences is the surest way to broaden your mind, lessen your prejudices and help you find what you love in life. Have fun, let go and enjoy everything the world has to offer – it’s a beautiful place.
Live. Love. Laugh
To love and to laugh are two of life’s essentials. They will help you through difficult days, pick you up when you are feeling down and give you strength to keep going. Love comes in many forms – friends, family and partners – so spend your time with people that make you smile. Find humour in the darkest days. You can never love or laugh too much.
You can do anything and be anything you dream of. It may take hard work, commitment and a little bit of luck but nothing is off limits. Do not worry about what other people will think and what could go wrong. Instead ask yourself, what could go right? What could this teach me? If I fail, how could this help me grow? Fear can hold us back from so many wonderful experiences. Believe in yourself.
Recognise the joy in the everyday
It’s the little things in life that matter. A hug, a family breakfast, watching the sunset. Not every day will be good but there is good in everyday. All too often, we focus on the big things and are always striving, always dissatisfied and left wanting. But if you stop for a moment and notice the amazing things all around you, you will find joy in the simplest moments.
